Description
View of Wilfred Thesiger's party at a Bani Yas settlement in Liwa Oasis. In the left foreground three Bani Yas villagers pose in front of a fence made of palm fronds. One of the villagers, a bearded man with a rifle, sits in the sand, while to his left a man and a boy stand beside a couched camel. On the right one of Wilfred Thesiger's Rashid Bedouin companions unloads a second couched camel. In the background a door in the palm frond fence is open, and behind it a number of 'arish huts made of palm fronds (locally called saaf) sit inside the enclosure. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's journey from Al Ain to Liwa oasis, Al Dhafra and Baynunah sands in November and December 1948.
