Description
Full length sanding portrait of an Arab man in the Al Ain / Buraimi oasis. An Arab man stands facing forward in front of a low [ghaf?] tree, holding a rifle over his shoulder. The muzzle of the rifle is stuffed with feathers in order to prevent sand getting into the barrel. The man has a thick dark beard and wears a khanjar (dagger) on a cartridge belt over his coloured thobe (long shirt). He also wears a ghutra (headscarf) tied loosely around his head. In the far background a few trees grow in an expanse of sand. This image was taken between December 20, 1948, and January 27, 1949, during which time Wilfred Thesiger stayed with Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in Al Ain and joined him on a number of hunting excursions.
