Description
Seated portrait of one of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's retainers at Al Ain. The man kneels in the sand holding a rifle in his right hand. He wears a dark coloured thobe (long shirt), a plain headscarf (ghutra) topped with agal (head ropes), and a khanjar (dagger) tucked into his cartridge belt. In the background the sand is bare of vegetation, and in the far distance there is a line of trees. This image was taken during April 6-30, 1948, when Wilfred Thesiger stayed at Al Muwaiji fort in Al Ain as a guest of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
