Description

Group portrait of sailors hoisting the main sail on a dhow (sailboat) in the Persian Gulf near Dubai. A pile of sails and rigging sits on the deck of the dhow in the far left foreground. Behind two lines of sailors stand on deck. The sailors lean to the right, each holding onto the same thick rope. In the background the dhow's main sail hangs in the air. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's May 18-28, 1948 journey by dhow from Dubai to Bahrain Island.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
