Description

Half length seated portrait of a tribesman of the Habab in the Al Ain / Buraimi oasis. A tribesman of the Habab kneels in the sand with one hand on his thigh. Over his light coloured thobe (long shirt) he wears a cartridge belt with suspenders and a silver embossed khanjar (dagger). He also wears a long ghutra (headscarf) hanging loosely around his head and shoulders, which is topped with a thick dark 'agal (head rope). In the background trees grow in the sand alongside a few 'arish huts made from palm fronds. This image was taken between December 20, 1948, and January 27, 1949, during which time Wilfred Thesiger stayed with Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in Al Ain and joined him on a number of hunting excursions.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
