Description
Standing full length portrait of Wilfred Thesiger's companions with his camel on a dune in Liwa oasis. One of Wilfred Thesiger's Rashid Bedouin companions stands on a dune with his camel in front of a high ridge of sand. The man faces away from the camera and is wearing a ghutra (headscarf) and a thobe (long shirt) topped with a cartridge belt. He is looking into the far distance where a number of 'arish huts sit atop a high dune overlooking the date palm groves that grow in depressions below. The 'arish huts are made of date palm fronds (locally called saaf) and are occupied by Bani Yas villagers. In the far distance high rippled dunes rise high above the horizon. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's journey from Al Ain to Liwa oasis, Al Dhafra and Baynunah sands in November and December 1948.
