Description
Standing full length portrait of Salim bin Ghabaisha, one Wilfred Thesiger's travelling companions, at a palm grove in Liwa oasis. In the foreground Salim bin Ghabaisha, a tribesman of the Bayt Imani lineage of Rashid Bedouin, stands in an expanse of sand beside a few clumps of qassis (sedge), holding a rifle over his shoulder. Salim bin Ghabaisha wears a dark ghutra (headscarf) and a cartridge belt with leather suspenders over his light coloured thobe (long shirt). In the right distance a palm grove, likely cultivated by Bani Yas villagers, grows in a depression below a ridge of sand. In the far distance a second grove of date palms grows behind the ridge, beyond which more dunes rise. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's journey from Al Ain to Liwa oasis, Al Dhafra and Baynunah sands in November and December 1948.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
