Description
Standing full length profile portrait of Sahail bin Tahi, a member of Wilfred Thesiger's travelling party, on a sand dune during the party's journey from Al Ain to Liwa oasis, likely in the region of Al Humrah sands. Sahail bin Tahi, a tribesman of the Mudairiba lineage of Rashid Bedouin, stands in the central foreground looking into the far left distance. He wears a ghutra (headscarf) on his head and has a khanjar (dagger) on a belt over his thobe (long shirt). He carries a rifle in a tasselled leather sheath over his left shoulder and is leaning on a camel stick. Behind him the crest of a dune runs from the near foreground into the right background, and in the distance beyond low rolling dunes stretch off into the horizon. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's journey from Al Ain to Liwa oasis, Al Dhafra and Baynunah sands in November and December 1948.
