Description

Portrait of a sailor on the mast of a dhow (sailboat) in the Persian Gulf near Dubai. A sailor rests during his climb up the mast of a dhow. He is near the top of the mast, and looks down towards the ground. He grips the mast with his legs, and holding his upper body to the mast with a length of rope around his shoulders. From the top of the mast many thick ropes hang and behind him a large striped sail hangs from a sail yard. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's May 18-28, 1948 journey by dhow from Dubai to Bahrain Island.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
