Description

Seated profile portrait of Salim bin Ghabaisha, one of Wilfred Thesiger's Bedouin companions, by a watchtower in the Al Ain/Buraimi Oasis. Salim bin Ghabaisha sits on a ruined wall with a rifle across his lap near a large bush. He wears a decorated cartridge belt over his thobe (long shirt). The foundations of the wall lead towards a two storey watchtower in the far distance. This image was taken during April 6-30, 1948, when Wilfred Thesiger stayed at Al Muwaiji fort in Al Ain as a guest of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
