Description
View of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's hawking party in Al Khatam sands near Jebel Hafeet (Jabal Hafit). Four falconers holding peregrine falcons sit on their camels in a vast expanse of flat sand dotted with tufts of qassis (sedge) and other vegetation. The mounted falconer second from the right is likely Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He holds a camel stick in his right hand and a falcon on his left hand. In the central foreground one man adjusts the saddle on a couched camel, while at the far right another member of the party stands in the sand. Tufts of vegetation grow across the sands into the far distance, where Jebel Hafeet (Jabal Hafit) rises above the horizon. This image was taken between December 20, 1948, and January 27, 1949, during which time Wilfred Thesiger stayed with Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in Al Ain and joined him on a number of hunting excursions.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
