Description

Standing profile portrait of Musallim bin Al Kamam, a member of Wilfred Thesiger's travelling party, on a dune beside a salt flat in Liwa oasis. Musallim bin Al Kamam, a sheikh of the Musaifar lineage of Rashid Bedouin, stands in profile in the right foreground on the crest of a wind-rippled dune. He looks into the far left distance and holds two camel sticks in his hands. Musallim bin Al Kamam wears a ghutra (headscarf) and a thobe (long shirt) topped with a cartridge belt. In the distance beyond rolling dunes dotted with a few tufts of qassis (sedge) lead into a salt flat covered in salt bushes. In the further distance high rippled dunes border the far edge of the salt flat. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's journey from Al Ain to Liwa oasis, Al Dhafra and Baynunah sands in November and December 1948.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
