Description

Profile portrait of a tribesman of the Manasir Bedouin, a falconer in Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's hunting party, posing with a falcon in the Al Khatam sands near Al Ain. The falconer kneels in the sand, facing directly forward, holding a peregrine falcon on one arm. He wears a ghutra (headscarf) wrapped closely around his head and a khanjar (dagger) on a cartridge belt over his coloured thobe (long shirt). In one hand the falconer holds a hood for the falcon, while on the other the peregrine falcon perches on a mangalah (cuff) over his arm. In front of the man a plant grows from the sand while behind him the branches of a bare tree fill the background. This image was taken between December 20, 1948, and January 27, 1949, during which time Wilfred Thesiger stayed with Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in Al Ain and joined him on a number of hunting excursions.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
