Description

View of Wilfred Thesiger's travelling companions at a well near Sharjah city during the party's journey from Jabal Sumeini to Sharjah. Three men stand around the opening of a well. Two of the men wear thobe (long shirts), while a third man wears only a futah (wraparound skirt). The men haul water from the well via ropes and pulleys attached to the wooden frame over the well, the opening of which has been reenforced with concrete or rammed earth. Salim bin Kabina (centre left), a tribesman of the Bayt Imani lineage of Rashid Bedouin, stands to the left of the men. He wears a thobe (long shirt) crossed with leather bandoliers attached to a cartridge belt and an embroidered ghutra (headscarf).
Camels wait around the well for water. In the background a vast flat plain dotted with bushes stretches out into the far distance.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
