Description
Full length portrait of a man standing with a camel in Al Ain oasis. On the left a man stands in the sand amongst dry vegetation, holding the head rope of a thoroughbred Batina camel (centre right). The man wears a waistcoat and a cartridge belt over his thobe (long shirt). He is also wearing a ghutra (headscarf), which is blown by the wind. The camel stands in profile, facing towards the left. It is saddled with an Omani style wooden saddle. In the background is a low rock mound. Trees, bushes and grasses grow in the sand surrounding them. This image was taken during April 6-30, 1948, when Wilfred Thesiger stayed at Al Muwaiji fort in Al Ain as a guest of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
