Description
View of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's hunting party in Al Khatam sands near Jebel Hafeet (Jabal Hafit). In the left foreground a peregrine falcon stands in soft sand. On the right a man stands nearby in the sand. He wears a patterned ghutra (headscarf) topped with an 'agal (head rope), a waistcoat and cartridge belt with silver studded leather suspenders over his thobe (long shirt). Behind the falcon in the near left another member of the hunting party kneels in the sand with his hands on his thighs. Cooking pots, supplies and saddles lie in the sand around the camp. In the background other members of the party rest in the sand, and further behind on the left one man sits atop a far dune. In the far background the mountain Jebel Hafeet (Jabal Hafit) rises above a vast expanse of rolling sands dotted with scattered vegetation. This image was taken between December 20, 1948, and January 27, 1949, during which time Wilfred Thesiger stayed with Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in Al Ain and joined him on a number of hunting excursions.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
