Description

Three-quarter length standing portrait of Captain Haji Mansur on his dhow (sailboat) in the Persian Gulf near Bahrain Island. Haji Mansur, the nakhoda or captain of the dhow on which Wilfred Thesiger travelled from Dubai to Bahrain Island, stands next to a wooden rail at the bow of the ship. He is wearing a T-shirt, a wraparound skirt and has a taqiyah cap on his head. Behind him a sail is rigged to the bow yard. In the distance another dhow crosses the calm water. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's May 18-28, 1948 journey by dhow from Dubai to Bahrain Island.
