Description
Standing full length portrait of a man and a thoroughbred camel on an Abu Dhabi island. A man wearing a headscarf, thobe (ankle-length shirt) and a waistcoat stands to the right of a large pale thoroughbred camel with a rough rope halter. The camel belongs to an Abu Dhabi sheikh and has been left to pasture on this island. The ground is covered in fine sand, tufts of grass and small shrubs. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's week and a half long sailing trip around the Abu Dhabi Islands with Sheikh Hazaa bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan Al Nahyan and their retainers in March 1948.
