Description
Seated portrait of Muhammad, a sheikh of the Rashid Bedouin, at his encampment in the Ramlat ar Rabbad sands near Bir al Tawil. Muhammad, an elderly man with a long white beard, kneels in the sand. He is looking down at his hands, which he holds together at his waist. In the background a single metal cooking pot sits in the sand. Wilfred Thesiger and his men stayed with Muhammad and his extended family in the Ramlat ar Rabbad for a few days during their first crossing of the Empty Quarter (Rub' al Khali) in December 1946.
