Description
Portrait of three members of Wilfred Thesiger's travelling party at a well in the Al Dhafra or Baynunah sands. At the far left a camel watches as Musallim bin Al Kamam, a sheikh of the Musaifar lineage of Rashid Bedouin (centre left), stands in sand litter with camel droppings holding a metal pot. Musallim bin Al Kamam's head is bare and he wears only a wraparound skirt. At the centre another of Wilfred Thesiger's Rashid Bedouin companions stands holding a leather bag filled with water. On the right Salim bin Ghabaisha, a tribesman of the Bayt Imani lineage of Rashid Bedouin, stands next to the well opening. He wears a cap and a wraparound skirt, and holds a rope in his hands. Behind the men a steep sand dune dotted with a few tufts of vegetation fills the background. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's journey from Al Ain to Liwa oasis, Al Dhafra and Baynunah sands in November and December 1948.
