Description
Seated portrait of two members of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's hunting party preparing food in Al Khatam sands near Al Ain. On the left two pots of meat stew on a fire tended by two men sitting side by side at the centre right. The man in the centre, wearing a patterned ghutra (headscarf) topped with an 'agal (head rope) and khanjar (dagger) over his thobe (long shirt), kneels holding a camel stick. The man beside half kneels, resting one arm on his knee and holding a thin object (possibly a sliver of wood?) in both hands. He wears a wraparound skirt, a thobe, and a taqiyah cap. Behind them gear lies in the sand around the camp, and in the far distance a number of trees and bushes grow. This image was taken between December 20, 1948, and January 27, 1949, during which time Wilfred Thesiger stayed with Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in Al Ain and joined him on a number of hunting excursions.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
