Seated portrait of an elderly tribesman of the Rashid, one of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's Bedouin retainers, in Al Ain. The man kneels in rocky sand, grasping a camel stick in his left hand. His right hand is in his lap. He has a headscarf (ghutra) draped over his head and wears a khanjar (dagger) tucked into a leather belt over his thobe (long shirt). Behind the man is a flat plain of rocky sand, almost bare of vegetation. This image was taken during April 6-30, 1948, when Wilfred Thesiger stayed at Al Muwaiji fort in Al Ain as a guest of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
