Description
View of Wilfred Thesiger's sailing companions sitting on the deck of a sailboat (dhow) in the Abu Dhabi islands. A large group of men and boys sits on the stern deck of a sailing ship in a calm sea. The men are crowded together on deck, and all wear headscarves for protection from the strong sun. In the foreground, Sheikh Hazaa bin Sultan Al Nahyan sits at the far right, holding a small boy in his lap. He wears a waistcoat over his thobe (shirt) and a thick black 'agal (head rope) over his ghutra (headscarf). In the background, one man crouches on the poop rail at the stern of the boat, holding on to the boat's overhead frame. Behind the boat the sea is tranquil. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's week and a half long sailing trip around the Abu Dhabi Islands with Sheikh Hazaa bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan Al Nahyan and their retainers in March 1948.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
