Description

Group portrait of sailors hoisting the main sail on a dhow (sailboat) in the Persian Gulf near Dubai. Sailors stand on the deck of a dhow. They all hold onto a thick rope and lean to the left. Behind them the dhow's main sail hangs in the air. In the near right foreground a lifeboat filled with sails and rigging sits on the deck of the dhow. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's May 18-28, 1948 journey by dhow from Dubai to Bahrain Island.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
