Description
View of Wilfred Thesiger's travelling party packing up in the Baynunah or Al Khatam sands during their return journey to Al Ain. On the left a man holding a camel stick stands in front of a saddled and couched camel. Sahail bin Tahi, a tribesman of the Mudairiba lineage of Rashid Bedouin, stands at the centre left. He has a thick beard and is wearing the front of his thobe (long shirt) tucked behind his khanjar (dagger). At the centre right Musallim bin Al Kamam, a sheikh of the Musaifar lineage of Rashid Bedouin, stands holding a gun above his shoulder. On the far right a fourth man stands facing towards the left, holding a rifle under his arm. Behind them a few laden camels are couched in the flat sand. Behind them small dots of vegetation grow in flat sand, while beyond low dunes stretch into the far horizon. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's journey from Al Ain to Liwa oasis, Al Dhafra and Baynunah sands in November and December 1948.
