Portrait of a thirty-seven-year-old Japanese man named Tanaka Rentarō, a samurai and officer (performing the function of deputy secretary) on the 1864 Ikeda mission to France. He is pictured seated, wearing traditional dress of kimono with mon (family emblem), and is carrying long and short swords (katana and wakizashi).
