Description
Seated portrait of Muhammad, a sheikh of the Rashid Bedouin, at his encampment in the Ramlat ar Rabbad sands near Bir al Tawil. Muhammad, an elderly man with a long white beard, is kneeling in the sand facing away from the sun. His hands are placed on his thighs, and he looks directly towards the photographer. Wilfred Thesiger and his men stayed with Muhammad, a sheikh of the Rashid Bedouin, and his extended family in the Ramlat ar Rabbad for a few days during their first crossing of the Empty Quarter (Rub' al Khali) in December 1946.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
