Description
Seated group portrait of Wilfred Thesiger with Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his family and retainers near Al Ain. Seven people kneel close together in the sand. Two young boys sit together in front of the group at the left. The boy on the left, wearing a patterned ghutra (headscarf), may be Sheikh Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan. Behind the boys, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan kneels at the far left. He is wearing a waistcoat over his thobe (long shirt) and holds a rifle against his shoulder. Another man holding a rifle sits to his right. Wilfred Thesiger sits in the centre of the back row. He wears a floral ghutra (headscarf) with a very thick agal (head rope) and holds a rifle in a protective leather sleeve. At the far right sits a young Sheikh Mubarak bin Mohammed Al Nahyan. He holds onto his khanjar (dagger) with his right hand. In the background low sand dunes and trees sit in the far distance. This image was taken during April 6-30, 1948, when Wilfred Thesiger stayed at Al Muwaiji fort in Al Ain as a guest of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
