Description
Three-quarter length group portrait of Wilfred Thesiger standing with four sheikhs outside Qasr Al Hosn fort in Abu Dhabi. All of the men wear ceremonial bishts (robes) over their thobes (ankle-length shirts) and hold camel sticks [the lower portions of their bodies are outside the frame]. The man at the far left is a Sheikh of the Naim tribe. He wears a Western suit jacket under his bisht. Sheikh Hazaa bin Sultan Al Nahyan, wearing a light coloured bisht, stands second from the left. Wilfred Thesiger stands at the centre with his hands clasped over the handle of his camel stick. Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan Al Nahyan, then the ruler of Abu Dhabi (1928-1966), stands second from the right. Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan Al Nahyan stands at the far right. On the left, behind the sheikhs, a few men look on in front of the outer walls of Qasr Al Hosn fort. In the far distance behind 'arish huts and a number of palms dot the sand.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
