Description

Close up portrait of a Muhammad bin Al Jabari, a Awamir Bedouin tribesman at a fort (likely Al Muwaiji Fort) in Al Ain. Muhammad bin Al Jabari stands stroking his beard in front of a fort in Al Ain (only his upper body is visible). He has thick shoulder length hair and a bushy dark beard. He wears a plain ghutra (headscarf) topped with a dark 'agal (head rope) and a light coloured thobe (long shirt). Behind him a large bush grows along the fort wall. This image was taken between December 20, 1948, and January 27, 1949, during which time Wilfred Thesiger stayed with Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in Al Ain and joined him on a number of hunting excursions.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
