Description
Half-length seated portrait of three Arab or Bedouin men in the Al Ain region. The men are seated in a line on the ground. They wear thobes (long shirts) with headscarves (ghutra) topped with agal (head ropes). The men at the centre and the man on the right both have khanjar (daggers) tucked into their cartridge belts. In the background a flat plain of rocky sand, almost entirely bare of vegetation, spreads out into the distance. In the far background is a line of access shafts for aflaj (irrigation tunnels). This image was taken during April 6-30, 1948, when Wilfred Thesiger stayed at Al Muwaiji fort in Al Ain as a guest of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
